Brand strategy

Strategy is the part of branding that happens before anything is drawn. It is a short document with a long life: it tells a designer what to make, a salesperson what to say, and a manager what the business should turn down.

Businesses whose offer has outgrown their current story, or that are entering a new market, sector or customer segment.

How we work through brand strategy

Positioning that survives a crowded market

In most Tanzanian categories the offer is not unique, so positioning has to come from focus rather than novelty. We work out where a business can plausibly be the obvious choice, and write it in language a non-marketer can repeat.

  • Who you serve, and who you do not
  • What you do better than the alternatives
  • What the brand is not, which is often the useful half

Audience, market and channel research

We look at how the business is actually found today, what competitors promise, and where customers decide between them. That review sets the questions the messaging has to answer instead of assuming what people want to hear.

Naming and tone of voice

When naming is in scope we develop a shortlist and test it for the practicalities: how it reads over a phone line, how it survives a domain and a social handle, and whether it means anything unintended in Swahili or English.

  • Messaging framework with key messages per audience
  • Language rules, including English and Swahili usage
  • How the brand addresses people: formally or plainly

What you receive

  • Positioning statement and audience definition
  • Messaging framework with key messages
  • Competitor and market notes
  • Naming shortlist when naming is in scope
  • Tone of voice guide with written examples

Questions we are often asked

  • What do we actually receive at the end?

A written strategy you can hand to a designer or to a new member of staff, plus the messaging framework the identity and campaign work is built from. It is deliberately short and specific rather than a thick deck nobody reopens.

  • Can strategy be done on its own, without new design work?

Yes, and it is often the right first step. A business can sharpen its positioning and messaging, then apply it to the website, sales documents and social channels before committing to a full identity.

  • Do you work in both English and Swahili?

Yes. Both languages are part of the work where they matter, and copy is written for how people actually speak rather than translated word for word.
